Resources for medical education at Geisel School of Medicine

Dr. Swenson received his PhD in anatomy, with a focus on neuroscience at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, studying neuronal plasticity. After a postdoctoral fellowship in neurophysiology at Loyola, he spent three years as visiting fellow in the Department of Physiology of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology, studying autonomic nervous system neurophysiology. He subsequently continued his training in medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, graduating cum laude as a James Scholar. He completed a residency in neurology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and remained on the clinical staff as well as on the faculty at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He became chair of the Department of Anatomy in 2007 and, more recently, chair of the department of medical education, stepping down from that position in 2018. He is on the editorial board of several journals and has served as a reviewer and member of NIH study sections as well as an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and, for 6 years, a committee member for the National Board of Medical Examiners. Throughout his tenure at Dartmouth/Geisel he has been engaged in teaching anatomy, histology, and neuroscience to medical students, residents and graduate students.
